The board of Vishal Mega Mart Limited has approved a fresh five-year term for Gunender Kapur as Managing Director and CEO, extending his leadership at the value retail chain through August 2031, well ahead of his current term’s scheduled expiry.
The board approved Kapur’s reappointment for five years, running from September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2031. As part of the move, he has been redesignated as ‘Founder, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer’ of the company.
Kapur was originally appointed MD and CEO for a three-year term effective June 27, 2024, with that tenure set to expire on June 26, 2027. The reappointment comes on the back of solid recent performance. Under Kapur, the retailer posted Q1 FY27 results showing 18.7% year-on-year revenue growth and 25.6% year-on-year profit growth, while expanding its store footprint to 819 locations.
Kapur holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering with honours from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science and an MBA from the University of Delhi. He brings over 42 years of experience in management and investment across the consumer and retail sectors, with prior associations including Hindustan Lever, Unilever Nigeria PLC, Reliance Industries, and TPG Capital.
