UNIREC launches Project Sundri to power a circular fashion movement in India

UNIREC, India’s first fashion brand made entirely from recycled fabric, has launched a new initiative that blends sustainability with social impact. Called Project Sundri, the initiative focuses on upcycling used garments into functional fashion accessories, while empowering underprivileged women through skill development and financial independence.

Through Project Sundri, customers can return their used UNIREC t-shirts via the brand’s website. These are then transformed by trained women artisans into pouches, tote bags, laptop sleeves, and more. The project is being implemented in partnership with the Srujna Foundation, a Mumbai-based non-profit working towards women’s economic empowerment.

Kapil Bhatia, Founder & CEO of UNIREC.Every product we upcycle through Project Sundri holds the energy of a second chance for clothes, for women, and for how we consume. As we like to say, Yahaan Har Dhaaga Dobara Zinda Hota Hai,’ aka, each thread lives again. This initiative revives not just fabric, but forgotten futures. This is sustainability that feels, breathes, and belongs.”

Named after Bhatia’s grandmother, Sundri Bhatia, the project was launched on the brand’s foundation day and pays tribute to resilience and resourcefulness. Each upcycled item includes a unique identity tag sharing the story of the woman who created it.

In its pilot phase, 10 women artisans produced over 300 products, setting the stage for a broader impact. UNIREC now aims to upcycle one million products by 2030 and empower thousands of women across India.

Project Sundri is not just about fashion—it’s about giving garments and lives a second chance.
