Tata Group’s retail arm, Trent Ltd., is preparing its most ambitious expansion yet for premium fashion chain Westside, targeting as many as 100 new store openings annually — a dramatic jump from its current pace of 10 to 15 stores a year, according to a Bloomberg report.
Scaling Up From ~300 Stores
Westside currently operates around 300 stores and plans to deepen its presence in major metro markets while pushing into untapped regions, including India’s northeastern states. Westside CEO Shailina Parti acknowledged the scale of the ambition, noting that a jump from roughly a dozen stores a year to a hundred is a significant leap, but said the company feels ready for it.
The chain, which sells apparel, beauty products, home décor, footwear, and accessories, is leaning on a broader product mix and refreshed in-store experiences to fuel growth, with Parti pointing to a push toward more fashion-forward, impulse-friendly merchandise.
Why Now: Zudio Slowdown Meets Fresh Capital
The expansion comes as Trent searches for new growth engines amid cooling momentum at Zudio, its value-fashion format, which is facing intensifying competition from Reliance Industries and the Aditya Birla Group, alongside broader pressure from inflation and cautious consumer spending.
To fund the push, Trent’s board approved a Rs 2,500 crore (about $260 million) fundraise earlier this year. Much of that capital is earmarked for accelerating Westside’s physical retail rollout, alongside its e-commerce operations and international ambitions.
AI-Driven Supply Chain and Digital Push
Trent is also leaning on artificial intelligence to speed up product design and tighten supply-chain efficiency, aiming to accelerate merchandise development and respond faster to shifting fashion trends. The AI integration is expected to roughly halve manufacturing lead times, bringing production cycles down to about 30 days — putting Westside on more competitive footing with fast-fashion rivals.
On the digital side, backed by the fresh capital, Westside is looking to scale its online storefront meaningfully, targeting e-commerce growth to around 10% of total sales, up from roughly 6% currently.
Market Outlook
Opinions are split on the bet. Some analysts flag risks from slowing consumer spending, while others see Westside as Trent’s next major growth engine, pointing to improvements in store design, merchandising, and brand positioning. The combination of aggressive physical expansion and an AI-optimized supply chain is being read as both a defensive and offensive move in India’s increasingly crowded retail market — one aimed at capturing premium high-street shoppers and fast-growing digital consumers at the same time.
