Suta, the homegrown Indian fashion brand known for its handcrafted sarees and artisanal apparel, has crossed its first international border. The label, founded in 2016 by sisters Sujata and Taniya Biswas, has opened a 410 sq. ft. store at Cœur de Ville mall in Grand Bay, Mauritius — its debut outpost outside India.
The launch marks a significant step for a brand that has grown entirely without external funding. From a small online operation, Suta has expanded to more than 20 experiential stores across Indian cities including Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, and Chennai, working with over 17,000 artisans along the way.
Speaking about the milestone, Sujata Biswas, Co-founder of Suta, said, “Opening our first international store feels incredibly special. From humble beginnings to reaching global milestones, our journey has been built on belief, resilience, and the strength of our community. Mauritius felt like the perfect place to take this step, as it carries a beautiful cultural connection with India while welcoming global influences.”
Taniya Biswas, Co-founder of Suta, added, “Suta has always been more than just a brand; it is a story of dreams stitched together with courage and community. Taking Suta beyond India is not just about expansion, it’s about sharing our love for handcrafted drapes with the world. This store is a celebration of how far we have come and the many stories we hope to create globally.”
The store has been designed to carry the brand’s signature warmth into a new geography. The storefront features a cement-textured façade and antique-style lighting, while the tagline ‘Dipped in Love’ greets visitors at the entrance. Inside, lime-washed walls, cane pendant lights, rustic décor, and indoor plants in ceramic planters create an earthy, handcrafted atmosphere. A mural wall at the rear serves as both a visual anchor and storytelling centrepiece.
Shoppers at the Grand Bay location will also have access to an in-store tailor, lifetime alteration services, and customisation options — a level of service the brand says is central to its retail proposition in India and which it intends to replicate internationally.
